QIC (quarter-inch cartridge) is data storage tape format originally introduced in 1972 by 3M Company. QIC tape drives were the original format for data tape storage. QIC format tapes come in a variation of sizes, but are typically 25GB-40GB.
The QIC tape is .25 or ¼ inch (6.35mm) wide, and estimated to be 300 to 1,500 feet in length. The data is written to the QIC tape in linear tracks also known as "serpentine" mode. The tracks alternate direction from a step or head switch.
Many computer and server environments utilize the QIC-80 and QIC-40 in direct replacement of the floppy drive. Advancements in QIC format enabled IT professionals to be more confident with data protection because the QIC cartridge has a more durable cartridge casing in comparison to the floppy. The Travan cartridge is an evolution of the mini QIC cartridge that is utilized for personal computer use.
