Linear Tape Open also known as LTO, is a 1/2 inch magnetic data tape storage cartridge for backup tape drives and libraries. The technology was originally developed in the late 90’s.
The original manufacturers for LTO were Hewlett Packard (HP), Seagate, and IBM. The first generation LTO Ultrium cartridge was released in early 2000 and had a 100GB Native data storage capacity. If the files on the tape are compressed, the LTO1 backup tape cartridge can hold up to 200GB capacity.
The standard form-factor for LTO is known as Ultrium. The LTO model cartridges are known as "LTO Ultrium data cartridges." Numerous manufacturers distribute the LTO1 cartridge including Imation, Fuji, Dell, HP, Sony, Sun, Quantum, Maxell, Verbatim, and TDK. To date, there is five different generation LTO tapes.
